Grampsie words & cats

I have found myself using words my Grampsie used -- words like schmaltzy and dikabook ( the oo is pronounced like it would be in moon. Supposedly German for stomach or tummy. We were allowed to say belly -- too crude!) I have been using schamaltzy indiscriminately for two weeks. Must be missing my grandfather.

The other night Sadie snuck into our bedroom when I went to give Michael his fifth goodnight smooch. Since he doesn't have the top blanket over his feet, there is a space where it is perfect for a burrowing cat to dig into. The only problem was, her tail was sticking straight up and then bent like a shepherd's crook. I told her I could still see her and in a matter of nanoseconds, all of her was under the covers. It was adorable! Now who says cats can't learn stuff!

Playing catch up, sorta

Have a couple of things on my mind -- first of all, a negative thing. I went to Hamley's Cafe in Pendleton on Saturday -- don't know why there were so many people in there but the food was awful. I had their tuna melt -- sounded so good; Swiss cheese :P on a hoagie bun -- way too many onions. The coffee I ordered tasted both burnt and bitter. I really only wanted a little coffee with my carmel soy milk -- major disappointment. And the clam chowder. I cannot even describe what it tasted like because it didn't even taste like anything resembling clam chowder, soup or food in the general. I will give it another try in the future but so far, not impressed.

A weird thing -- Tonight I was reading while my honey watched basketball. At one point, during a time out, the announcers broke away to some trade between the Nets and the Nuggets being off. The owner is Russian, which seems so bloody odd to me. I am from the generation who learned civil defense in p.e. and how to birth a baby during a nuclear attack. Where the Russians were always the bad guys because they were commies. As an adult I can rationalize the communism -- good idea, just difficult to implement the way it should be because people are, after all, greedy -- I was shocked.  I know it is certainly possible for a Russian citizen to have enough money to buy a basketball team, it was still shocking. How far our world has come and yet, still not far enough.

Nonnie & Miss America

When I was a young girl in glasses, I just to screw up my nose to push the darn things up. Whenever I was with Nonnie and I did that, she would say, "Your grampsie and I think of you in the Miss America pageant, doing that." Now, no one could have imagined me in the Miss America pageant -- too tall, to big boobed, awkward -- but Nonnie did. My grandmother criticized me often -- too mouthy, too fat, you name it, but she did think I could go to the Miss America pageant. Thanks, Nonnie. I miss you and love you very much.

Governor

Thought I would check out the California election results to see if the marijuana initiative passed or failed. While I was there, checked on the governor's race. Jerry Brown won. What a blast from the past! I remember when he ran for president and was dating Linda Ronstadt. He was so hip then; now he's 72 and still pretty sexy, I think. I have always a thing for bald guys!

late night musings

You know that saying, "Getting old ain't for sissies?" That is the truth. The problem is, I am a sissie. I hate the fact that I didn't take better care of my body when I was younger -- my knees and shoulders ache like a hell, my neck is always crooked and I have all those things you hope you never get like high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Not me! you say to yourself, it won't happen to me! Bullshit.

My musings have not been that interesting to me so it's been a while since I have posted anything. Today on Facebook, a friend started a thread that continued all day -- people who misuse words or mix them up; like our and hour, your and you're, two, too, to, etc. Happens to be one of my biggest pet peeves. That and the misuse of the apostrophe. Unless the word is a contraction (I will = I'll) or is possessive (The dog's bowl), don't use an apostrophe! Let's not forget the lowly comma, either. You use a comma when making a list but only between the word list (Mary has four brothers; Sam, John, Rick and Joe). Been a while

It seems like forever since I posted anything. The job keeps me busy, despite the short hours; social obligations are starting to appear and I am just plain lazy sometimes.
Been watching the new Doctor Who on BBC America. Wasn't sure if I would like the new incarnation of my favorite Time Lord but Matt Smith is growing on me. I really like his companion Karen Gillan, and not just because we share the same first name. Amy Pond is spunky, like most of the companions, but she has a way of questioning the Doctor, which is quite different from the previous ladies. She seems to have no fear; which I find refreshing. It's been fun watching the new series evolve and I look forward to future episodes.
I will miss David Tennant. Next to Tom Baker, he has been my favorite Doctor, although Christopher Eccleston was a close third. David Tennant's Doctor Who was cheeky, as usual, but he was also more inclined towards looking at this companions as a love interest, in my opinion. That was a real departure from the old days, from what I remember. I read somewhere that Bill Nighy was asked to play the role but turned it down. I can see him in the role but I think he was too old. The first Doctor, William Hartnell, was older, and as the Doctor regenerated, he appeared younger each time. By the time I stopped watching the program -- only because it wasn't available locally any longer -- Peter Davison had become the Doctor. I barely remember Colin Baker, who replaced Tom Baker. Tom Baker was the first Doctor I ever saw. We stumbled upon the show on Oregon Public Broadcasting in the early 80s and were completely hooked. I even called my niece Sara "Sara Joy Henry Jane Smith" when I feel like teasing her. Now I have to add her married name to the list. LOL
